Sagunto rolls out a summer plan against motorbike and moped noise

Fifteen officers from the city force will patrol several points of the municipality this summer to fine drivers who breach the noise thresholds set by Valencian rules.

The operation begins with an intensive opening stretch and will then continue on a random basis throughout the season. The kit deployed — sound-level meter, digital tachometer and calibrator — lets every reading be logged with full legal safeguards and, where warranted, triggers the corresponding sanctioning file. María José Carrera, the councillor in charge of the police force, said that the racket from a handful of tampered bikes shows up every summer among the most repeated neighbour complaints, especially once the heat sets in and life moves onto the street. The Valencian sanctioning regime, set out in Law 7/2002 and Decree 19/2004, bars any vehicle from running above its approved threshold: minor breaches range between 60 and 600 euros, serious ones can climb up to 6,000 and, when the reading is around 6 dB(A) above the cap, the vehicle can be impounded on the spot (aytosagunto.es). The tests are carried out in spots well away from residential areas so that the procedure does not end up disturbing the very residents the plan aims to protect.
