Falla La Palmera de Sagunt closed four days of events to packed audiences and honoured the Lira Saguntina and the Grup de Danses de Morvedre.

La Palmera (a Fallas festival commission in Sagunto) has wrapped up its cultural week after four days of activities in which, according to the commission, attendance exceeded expectations. The programme ran under the motto "Que comence l'espectacle" (Let the show begin) and focused on the world of entertainment and how it connects with the Fallas. At some events the chairs ran out, said the commission's president, Josep Ripollés, who thanked both the fallas members and the other residents who came along.

The centrepiece was the presentation of the Palmera d'Or awards, which this year went to the Sociedad Lira Saguntina (a local music society) and the Grup de Danses de Morvedre (a Valencian folk dance group), two organisations with a long record in the city's cultural life. Their presidents, José Manuel Tarazona and Enric Cuenca, collected the awards. Both stressed that the recognition carries special value because it comes from another organisation in the local association network.

The awards were made by the Centro Ocupacional Sant Cristòfol de Sagunt. They were handed over at a gala that featured a string quintet from the Lira Saguntina, four cant d'estil singers (a traditional Valencian singing style) and a display of Valencian dances by the Grup de Danses de Morvedre.

The week had opened with a circus show that mixed magic, comedy, juggling, trapeze and illusion. The opening was attended by the falleras mayores (festival queens) of the Federación Junta Fallera de Sagunt, Empar Ríos and María Pozuelo, together with municipal representatives and members of the commission.

The 8th Pasarela Solidaria (charity fashion show) again filled the carrer Hort d'Ais, with around 70 amateur models. The parade aims to give visibility and support to local shops. The day also included performances by the Club de Gimnasia Sagunt and the young composer Vicente Ibáñez, and was attended by municipal representatives, among them the councillor for Commerce, Natalia Antonino.

The week ended with the traditional ollas (shared meal), which brought together more than 150 people, and an afternoon of music and socialising.

With this programme, La Palmera wanted to present the Fallas as a large collective show, link their traditions with other artistic disciplines and give a leading role to the city's cultural organisations and shops. According to El Periódico de Aquí.
