Halloween in Canet d'en Berenguer, Camp de Morvedre: free haunted house on 31 October

Canet d'en Berenguer, a neighbour of Sagunto in the Camp de Morvedre district, turns its Ethnological Museum into a free haunted house on 31 October. It opens from 7pm to 10.30pm for ages 7 to 18.

On Saturday 31 October 2026, the Ethnological Museum in Canet d'en Berenguer will stop being an exhibition venue and become a decaying circus. The attraction is called El circ dels horrors, it is a haunted house, and it costs nothing, although an invitation is required. Anyone who wants to go in must request one through the social media accounts of Canet town council.

Opening hours are 7pm to 10.30pm, and the activity is meant for boys and girls aged 7 to 18. Children under 10 must enter with an adult. Without the invitation there is no entry, so it is worth arranging it before that Saturday.

The show does not come from an outside production company. It was designed by the correspondents of the Espai Jove (the municipal youth space), a group of about twenty students from Canet's schools. They invented the story, built the sets and planned a route through six spaces.

For the atmosphere they looked at the oldest Halloween photographs, those from the early 20th century in the United States. Back then store-bought costumes barely existed and people made their own at home from old clothes, cardboard masks, papier-mâché or even paper bags. That look is far more unsettling than many of today's costumes, and it sets the tone for the whole route.

The visit starts in the museum garden, where a clown and a jester wait. From there visitors move into a room where several characters, who seem possessed by the spirits of the dead, tell the story of the place. Five more spaces follow, filled with mimes, balloons, stuffed toys and more clowns.

The setting matters too. According to Wikipedia, the Ethnological Museum occupies a 19th-century house restored for cultural use, an old building that suits the mood of the event.

The mayor, Pere Antoni, praised how involved the correspondents have been in the organisation and expects this edition to top the warm reception of the previous one.

The correspondents began organising Halloween activities in 2022. The 2024 celebration had to be cancelled because of the DANA (the severe storm that hit the Valencian Community). During the rest of the year the group takes part in youth meetings at district and regional level and helps with various municipal initiatives.
