Film discussion series on addictions in Sagunto 2026: two free screenings in October and November
Sagunto screens Beautiful Boy on 29 October and Otra ronda on 19 November at 17:30, with free entry and advance booking by WhatsApp.
To attend the Pantalla Abierta series, you need to book a seat first: both sessions are free, but places are handled through a WhatsApp message to 610528881. The screenings take place on 29 October and 19 November, both at 17:30, in the cafeteria of the Centro Cívico Antiguo Sanatorio (a municipal civic centre).
The Social Services department of Sagunto City Council has set the series up as a film discussion club: people watch a film and then talk about it. The Conselleria de Sanidad (the Valencian regional health ministry) of the Generalitat Valenciana funds the project, which belongs to the X Municipal Addiction Prevention Plan. With it, the council wants residents to understand better what addictions are and what consequences they have, and to create spaces where talking about the subject helps prevent problems linked to addictive behaviour.
The first session, on 29 October, features Beautiful Boy, siempre serás mi hijo. The film tells the story of addiction from inside a family and shows the suffering, the emotional bonds and the difficulties faced by the person affected and the people around them. It was released in 2018, directed by Felix van Groeningen and stars Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet. It draws on the memoirs of David Sheff, a father's account of his son's addiction, and on Tweak, the memoir by Nic Sheff, so it rests on real testimony.
On 19 November comes Otra ronda, which looks at alcohol from a social and cultural angle: where the limits of consumption lie and how it affects daily life. It was directed by Thomas Vinterberg (Druk in the original title) and won the Academy Award for best international film at the 93rd Oscars, where Vinterberg was also nominated for best director. Its plot starts from a psychiatrist's theory that keeping a blood alcohol level of 0.05 makes people more creative and relaxed, and four teachers decide to test it. That premise fits a debate on alcohol consumption.
The councillor for Social Services, Nuria Carbó, says the aim is to create a meeting point and open a conversation about addictions, with a more human and closer outlook.
Addiction prevention already had its autumn slot six years ago. In October 2020, as elperiodic.com reported, the council ran a gambling workshop for 3rd and 4th year ESO pupils (ages roughly 14 to 16) at IES Camp de Morvedre, from 19 to 30 October, within the municipal prevention plan and through the UPCCA community prevention unit. The current series, by contrast, is open to any interested resident.
