Anyone who wants to attend the 15th Camp de Morvedre Awards, organised by the local newspaper El Periódico de Aquí, has to register first: confirm by email at [email protected] or by phone on 611 624 192. The gala is free and open to the whole district. It starts at 19:30 on Wednesday 28 October at the restaurant El Mirador de Sagunto, calle de Llíria 46, and organisers ask guests to arrive by 19:15.
This fifteenth edition hands out 14 prizes in sport, culture, music, science, innovation, commerce, agriculture, gastronomy, health and security. The winners include organisations with decades of history and projects that started from nothing, drawn from very different municipalities across the Camp de Morvedre district. It is easiest to go through them area by area.
Puerto de Sagunto (the coastal district) collects three awards. Club Balonmano Puerto Sagunto receives the Sports Award for its 75th anniversary. Founded in 1951, the handball club is one of the big names of Spanish handball, and the prize also honours the players, board members and fans who have kept it going, with a special mention for Luis Madurga, a member of the founding team. On the court, the club won the silver division and was promoted in 2009-10 and again in 2022-23. The anniversary has already had an institutional echo: according to elperiodic.com in November 2025, the municipal plenary session unanimously approved a motion from five groups to congratulate the club, which was preparing events for the whole town.
The tech company Encamina, born in Puerto de Sagunto, is marking 25 years with more than 180 professionals across Spain and Latin America. Microsoft named it the best partner company in Spain in 2025, which puts a local firm at the front line of digital transformation and artificial intelligence. The training centre Open Space Comarcal, also in Puerto de Sagunto, takes the Business Award: its founder, Encarna Alacreu, started with few resources, gradually widened the services and this year opened new premises, aiming to keep creating jobs and connecting workers with companies.
The prizes with a Sagunto stamp are varied. The Associació de Moros i Cristians de Sagunt (the group behind the traditional reenactment festival) receives the Festivals Award: it has worked since 1989 and in 2026 secured regional tourist-interest status for the festival. The Tourism Award recognises the rehabilitation and museum conversion of the Grau Vell (the historic port area): the old fort and port warehouses were restored and the interpretation centre “Sagunt i la Mar” opened, telling more than two thousand years of history tied to the Mediterranean, through the joint effort of administrations, institutions and technical teams. Forn Germans Cortina wins the Commerce Award: it keeps the traditional bread and sweets and promotes them with humorous social media videos that have brought in a new audience. The scientist Isabel Cordero Carrión, from Sagunto, is honoured for her career in mathematics and astrophysics, developed at the Max Planck Institute for Astrophysics and the Paris-Meudon Observatory and within the international Virgo collaboration, which studies gravitational waves; the prize also values her science outreach. The short documentary “Sagunto, cultivando el futuro”, produced by the Agriculture Department of Sagunto City Council, receives the Agriculture Award as a tribute to those who keep working the land despite the sector's difficulties.
The Security Award is shared. One of the winners is the Local Police of the Sagunto beaches, which carried out 3,612 services in summer 2026 without a single drowning on the Sagunto coast.
The rest of the district contributes five more projects. In Quartell, “Enllà de la consulta” (from the municipal health department and the professionals Elena Marqués and Ama Soriano) wins the Health Award: for four years it has taken prevention and healthy habits to residents, especially older people, through talks with health staff. The other half of the Security Award goes to Civil Protection of Estivella, which marks 30 years of service and whose volunteers have worked on prevention and emergencies, above all forest fires. The Unió Musical d'Algímia d'Alfara won first prize and an honourable mention in 2025 in three competitions: those of the Diputación de Valencia, the Internacional Ciutat de València and the Valencian Community. The Grup de Teatre El Molinet, from Canet d'en Berenguer, receives the Culture Award after more than four decades of amateur theatre in Valencian, since 1979; its school has more than 70 children and it helps organise the Certamen de Teatre Amateur en Valencià “Vila de Canet”. And El Galliner de Faura, run by Javier Ríos, takes the Gastronomy Award for turning a village bar into a restaurant that draws diners from across the Valencian Community, with local produce, traditional recipes and creativity; the Guía Repsol (Spanish restaurant guide) has already recognised it.
