Sagunto observed a minute of silence outside its municipal buildings for the suspected gender-based murder of a woman in Cuenca. The Equality Department called it for 12:00 on 14 October.

Anyone in Sagunto who suspects a woman is suffering gender-based violence has a civic duty to report it: a call to 016 or to 112, the emergency number, is enough. The town hall's Equality Department (Área de Igualdad) reminded residents of this on Wednesday 14 October, the same day it called a public act of condemnation over a suspected gender-based murder committed in the province of Cuenca.

At 12:00, outside the doors of the municipal buildings, a minute of silence was observed. The victim, a 37-year-old woman, was allegedly murdered in Valverde de Júcar. Members of the Municipal Corporation (the elected council), town hall staff, local residents, and community groups and associations took part in the gatherings.

The official figures released with the call set out the context. 2025 ended with 47 women murdered and 42 have died so far in 2026, so with the year still open, five more would equal last year's total. Since 2003, when records began, 1,383 gender-based murders have been counted. Among minors, 68 have been victims since 2013, and three murders by vicarious violence (violence against children or other loved ones to hurt the woman) have been recorded in 2026.

The town hall has used this format before. According to elperiodic.com in April 2025, it called the same minute of silence at 12:00 then, with council members outside the public buildings, over a suspected gender-based murder in Gran Canaria.

For women in Sagunto who need support, the Women's Support Service of the Equality Department runs in person from Monday to Friday. It can be reached on 96 265 58 89, by WhatsApp on 607 248 363 (from 8:00 to 15:00) or by email at [email protected]. An appointment is advised, although urgent cases are seen without one.

A woman in a serious emergency can call the Emergency Coordination Centre on 112. If she has been assaulted and needs protection, she can reach the National Police (091 or 96 267 00 91), the Local Police (092 or 96 265 54 84) and the Guardia Civil (062).

Anyone needing urgent help can also call the Centre Dona 24 Hores of the Valencian Government on 900 580 888, or 016. The call does not appear on the phone bill, but the town hall reminds callers to delete it from the phone's call log.
