Darío Moreno (PSPV-PSOE), mayor of Sagunto since 2019, announced on Wednesday 7 October that he will again lead the Socialist ticket in the local elections of 23 May 2027, aiming for a third term.

Darío Moreno announced on his social media on Wednesday that he will run again for mayor of Sagunto. The current mayor and secretary general of the local PSPV-PSOE (the Valencian Socialist party) will lead the Socialist list in the municipal elections of 23 May 2027, aiming for a third consecutive term at the head of the City Council. By his own account, he faces the vote with the same enthusiasm as on day one.

Moreno became mayor in 2019, when the PSPV won seven council seats and 23.31% of the vote, and kept the post in 2023, when the Socialist list rose to 12 seats and 43.49%, with 13,798 votes. It fell one seat short of an absolute majority, which on a 25-member council is 13.

According to elperiodic.com in June 2023, the 2023-2027 council was made up of 12 PSOE councillors, five from the PP, three from Iniciativa Porteña, two from Vox, two from Compromís and one from EU-Unides Podem. Moreno was elected mayor with the 12 votes of his group: Iniciativa Porteña and EU-Unides Podem abstained, while PP, Vox and Compromís voted against.

In August 2023, valenciaplaza.com reported, Moreno set as priorities for the new term the university campus with the Universitat de València, the new Palace of Justice, at €24.2 million, and the regeneration of the coastline.

In his message, Moreno defended the record of these years: he said the city has been transformed by walking the streets and listening to people, and he highlighted his policies on employment, public services, social affairs and security. He placed industrial growth and its impact on the city among the main challenges of the coming years: in his view, Sagunto is on the map of the big industrial investments, and that growth must translate into more well-being and progress.

The mayor also said he will keep demanding investment from other administrations and asked the rest, especially the Generalitat (the Valencian regional government), to deliver as, in his words, the City Council does. He said he brings the experience gained over two terms and will keep the same closeness to residents as in recent years.

The announcement settles one of the main unknowns of the local political scene with about seven and a half months to go before the vote.
