Atlético Saguntino draws 2-2 in Crevillente after leading 0-2
Atlético Saguntino picked up a point away at Crevillente Deportivo on Wednesday, drawing 2-2 after leading 0-2 thanks to a brace from Sergio Magariño that the home side overturned in the second half.
The match was played at the Enrique Miralles municipal stadium, Crevillente Deportivo's home ground since the club was founded in 1967, with a capacity for 3,500 spectators according to the English Wikipedia page for the Alicante club. It was there that Atlético Saguntino played a match of two very different halves: the Sagunto side dominated with authority for the first 45 minutes, then gave away almost everything it had won in the second. Neither team managed to settle the game while holding its early lead, and the final score reflects two very different paces across the two halves.
The script flipped completely between the first and second acts. Sergio Magariño put the visitors ahead in the opening minutes and forced Crevillente to play almost the whole first half chasing the game. Guillem Beltrán's side controlled the pace of the match and extended the lead from the penalty spot, again through Magariño, who completed his brace to make it 0-2 before half-time. Saguntino even came close to a third goal and went into the dressing room fully in control, against a rival that had started the season showing good competitive form but was now facing one of its toughest scenarios of the campaign.
Crevillente's response came as soon as play resumed. José Manuel Mas's team came out pushing forward and quickly found the 1-2 through Montejo, a goal that changed the whole dynamic of the match. From there, the home side grew in confidence, piled on chances and began to overwhelm a Saguntino team that could no longer reproduce the control it had shown in the first half. The equaliser came from Simón Moreno, making it a final 2-2, and Crevillente came close to completing a full comeback: the home side still had several chances late on to take all three points, but Saguntino held on under pressure and salvaged at least a point from a match it had earlier controlled completely.
The draw breaks an uncomfortable run for the Romans (Atlético Saguntino's nickname, a nod to Sagunto's Roman heritage), who arrived in Crevillente after back-to-back league losses to Ontinyent 1931 and Villarreal C, as well as a Copa Federación exit against Navalcarnero. For Crevillente, on the other hand, the point extends an unbeaten start to the season: on top of beating Acero in the opening rounds, the Alicante side has now added consecutive draws against Soneja, Roda and now Saguntino, a run that confirms the strength of José Manuel Mas's project at his Enrique Miralles home ground.
Atlético Saguntino comes into this stretch of the season with the backing of being, historically, one of the most solid projects at this level in Sagunto. The club was promoted to Segunda División B in the 2015/16 season after being crowned Tercera División champions and beating Calahorra in the promotion play-off, and the following year, in 2016-17, it enjoyed its best known campaign: it finished 11th in Segunda B, its best-ever league position, and also won the Copa RFEF by beating Fuenlabrada, with a 0-0 draw away in Madrid and a convincing 3-0 win in the return leg played in the Valencian Community, according to the club's Spanish Wikipedia page.
Today's result also comes after a pre-season aimed specifically at strengthening the defensive block. According to golsmedia.com, published in July 2026, the club signed left-back Marco Suárez, 22, from CD Illescas, to reinforce Guillem Beltrán's left flank. That signing was part of a project that had finished second the previous season, just one point behind Castellonense, and had reached the promotion play-off for Segunda Federación (the fourth tier), meaning the club was aiming to compete near the top of Tercera Federación again from the start of the campaign.
The draw leaves Saguntino with the feeling of a missed opportunity after dominating much of the match, while Crevillente confirms that its unbeaten league start is no coincidence, but the result of a fighting spirit it has now shown in several matches in a row.
