Valenciaport cuts water use 33.8% across Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia ports
The Valencia Port Authority (Valenciaport) cut its water consumption by 33.8% in 2024 across the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia, its latest Sustainability Report shows; the Sagunto coastline used 5,598 cubic metres.
The Valencia Port Authority (APV, Autoridad Portuaria de Valencia), the public body that runs the ports of Valencia, Sagunto and Gandia, has significantly cut its water use, according to its latest Sustainability Report. The 2024 report shows a 33.8% drop across the three facilities combined: total consumption fell from 39,047 cubic metres in 2023 to 25,838 cubic metres.
The figure directly affects Puerto de Sagunto (Sagunto's port), which used 5,598 cubic metres of water in 2024, according to the same report. That is well below the 19,836 cubic metres recorded at the Port of Valencia, which accounts for most of the savings after falling from 34,755 to 19,836 cubic metres between 2023 and 2024. The Port of Gandia, for its part, used 404 cubic metres.
APV attributes the drop to two main factors: adjusting garden irrigation zones after works carried out at port facilities, and fixing recurring leaks in the network by rerouting pipes. Both measures were applied across all three ports, although the effect was most visible in Valencia because of its larger infrastructure.
The body, which replaced the former Puerto Autónomo de Valencia (Autonomous Port of Valencia) on 1 January 1993, is responsible for running the Valencian Community's three state-owned ports under a single environmental management system. That shared structure explains why Puerto de Sagunto's figures always appear combined within Valenciaport's overall reports, rather than being published as a stand-alone record.
The cut in water use is part of the port authority's environmental commitment, certified under the ISO 14001 standard and the EU's EMAS Regulation. APV continuously tracks consumption and efficiency indicators at each of its facilities, including Sagunto's, and publishes a verified EMAS Environmental Statement every year.
