Compromís says too few Sagunt a Escena shows are in Valencian
The Compromís party says only four Teatro Romano shows in this year's Sagunt a Escena festival are performed in Valencian, though it welcomes the language's return to the 43rd edition in Sagunto.
The Valencian nationalist party has welcomed the return of Valencian-language shows to the Roman Theatre programme after years without them, but wants a bigger share in future editions. Sagunt a Escena, organised by the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC, the regional culture institute), has run for more than thirty editions and is considered the leading summer performing-arts festival in the Valencian Community, with Sagunto's Roman Theatre as its main stage. Beyond the ticketed programme criticised by Compromís, the festival also runs a free strand called OFF-ROMÀ, with street theatre, circus and music spread across squares in Sagunto and Puerto de Sagunto, aimed at a more family-friendly audience and not counted among the four shows flagged by the party. Compromís is asking organisers to give more weight to the language criterion when booking companies for future editions of the festival at the Roman Theatre.
