Sagunto's Roman Theatre expands capacity to 804 seats for Sagunt a Escena
Sagunto's Roman Theatre (Teatro Romano) has expanded its capacity to 804 seats, up from 608 in the last two editions, just three days before the 43rd edition of Sagunt a Escena opens this Saturday, 1 August.
The expansion had been planned in the festival's calendar, but it only went live on the website this week, days before the opening. The announcement came through Instagram, where organisers confirmed that tickets for the upper tier, known as cávea C, had gone on sale. That section needed accessibility and evacuation upgrades that had been limiting capacity. Since 2024 the venue has carried a roughly 30% seating cut due to safety, access and evacuation-plan requirements. Ahead of this 43rd edition, access points were improved, staircases built, railings repaired, safety nets installed and upper-level restrooms renovated, alongside fixing water leaks. The stepped concrete platform that currently limits capacity dates from a 1990-1994 restoration by architects Giorgio Grassi and Manuel Portaceli, an intervention that courts later ruled illegal in 1993 for breaching Spain's Historical Heritage Law — a legal dispute that still shapes what work can be done on the ancient monument.
