Party spokeswoman Maria Josep Picó recalled that 27 July marked 750 years since the king's death and highlighted his mark on Valencian institutions, historic charters (furs) and identity, a legacy going back to 1239, when he turned the newly conquered lands of Valencia into a separate kingdom within the Crown of Aragon.
The motion approved by the plenary calls for the City Council to officially join the institutional commemoration, honour the king and his wife, Violant d'Hongria, highlight the Carta Pobla de Morvedre (the town's founding charter), hold an institutional event on 9 October (Valencia's regional day), install a plaque at the Casa Consistorial (town hall) bearing a quote from the king's will, and run educational and cultural activities throughout 2026. For Compromís, the delay contrasts with the anniversary's symbolic weight in a city that claims a historic link to the founding of the Kingdom of Valencia.
Sagunto claims a direct link to this anniversary: the Carta Pobla de Morvedre, granted by Jaume I himself after the conquest, laid the legal and resettlement foundations of the medieval town, which explains why various local political parties have called in recent years for a visible commemoration of the king in street names and the municipal cultural agenda. The motion approved in July sets no specific deadlines for each action, which, according to Compromís, leaves it up to the local government to decide when and how the commitments are fulfilled.
While the City Council has not set a date for the institutional event on 9 October or for installing the plaque at the Casa Consistorial, the one already placed by Compromís in Plaça del Salvador remains, for now, the only public gesture linked to the anniversary in Sagunto's urban space.
