Puerto de Sagunto talk on 12 August solar eclipse packs the hall
The talk 'Sagunto, Territorio Eclipse' filled every seat at the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) on Tuesday 28 July, part of the City Council's programme ahead of the total solar eclipse on 12 August.
Puerto de Sagunto's Casa Municipal de Cultura (municipal culture house) was completely full on Tuesday 28 July for the talk ‘Sagunto, Territorio Eclipse: historia, ciencia y emoción de un eclipse’ (‘Sagunto, Eclipse Territory: history, science and emotion of an eclipse’), organised by the City Council's Department of Science, Innovation and University as part of special programming ahead of the total solar eclipse on 12 August.
The hall, which seats 425 people, was too small for the demand the event attracted. Isabel Cordero and Avelino Vicente, from the Sapiencia science outreach association, explained to the audience how a solar eclipse happens, its historical importance for scientific progress, and many curiosities about the phenomenon. Children took an especially active part, using the question time to clear up their doubts.
The 12 August eclipse is an exceptional event: the path of totality will cross northern Spain from coast to coast, from the Atlantic to the Mediterranean, placing the city of Valencia - and therefore the Sagunto district - inside the zone where the sun will be completely blocked, not just partially covered as in most of the rest of Spain. The moment of greatest darkness will fall at around 7.47pm local time, with the total phase lasting a maximum of 2 minutes 18 seconds.
Science, Innovation and University councillor Toni Iborra opened the event and thanked Sapiencia for its collaboration with the Council, saying the packed hall confirms residents' interest in science. Iborra recalled that his department, created this term, aims to give visibility to the work of researchers and link scientific activity with better public services and a stronger local business base.
Before the talk, attendees received certified glasses for safely viewing the eclipse, along with advice for the day itself. The Council's programme continues in the coming days with a science exhibition on the eclipse at the Pantalán (pier) in Puerto de Sagunto, ahead of a special event planned for 12 August itself, which will turn Sagunto into one of the best places in Spain to watch the eclipse.
