PP and Vox cut Sagunto's regional funding request from 79 to 7 million euros
Education and healthcare projects lose most of the regional funding PSPV-PSOE sought for Sagunto: PP and Vox voted down 20 amendments in Les Corts that aimed to raise the allocation from 7 to 79 million euros.
Parents in Sagunto and Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) still have no date for a new secondary school and two new nursery and primary schools that the PSPV-PSOE (Socialist party) put forward in the 2026 regional budget. The socialist group had filed twenty amendments asking the Generalitat (regional government) to allocate 79 million euros to the town; the PP and Vox parties voted as a bloc against nearly all of them, leaving the final amount at just 7 million.
Besides the new secondary school and the two nursery/primary schools, the rejected list included refurbishing CIPFP Eduardo Merello (a vocational training centre), opening new study tracks, improving accessibility in several buildings, installing air conditioning and adding shade to playgrounds. Behind these requests sits an earlier warning from the Municipal School Council itself, which in two reports flagged a shortage of school places and noted that 850 pupils enrolled late last year. The PSPV links this pressure to the town's population growth: it is now close to 75,000 registered residents and gains roughly a thousand new residents a year, driven by major industrial projects arriving in the area. Official INE (national statistics institute) figures, however, put the number at 73,031 in 2025, somewhat below the PSOE's estimate, though confirming the same upward trend.
On healthcare, the discarded amendment carried 461,000 euros to move the auxiliary clinic in El Raval out of premises the PSPV calls inadequate. This regional funding route opened up specifically after the Generalitat turned down the grant the city council had requested for that same relocation.
Javier Raro, PSPV-PSOE secretary general in Sagunto and council spokesperson, believes these funds should not depend on the colour of the regional government, since in his view they reflected demands shared across most of the town's political spectrum. He argues the projects were affordable and had been committed for some time, and that the approved 7 million euros falls short of the city's real growth.
The city council says it will keep covering what falls under its own responsibility with its own resources, while continuing to press the Generalitat for new funding for the town's public infrastructure.
