Architect Belén Genovés takes over the Fundación Bancaja committee in Sagunto
The board of Fundación Bancaja has unanimously appointed architect Belén Genovés Casquete as president of its Delegated Committee in Sagunto, the body that drives the foundation's cultural and social activity in the Camp de Morvedre district.
A change of leadership has arrived at the foundation behind much of the cultural and social funding in the Camp de Morvedre district. Fundación Bancaja's board unanimously approved renewing its Delegated Committee in Sagunto, putting architect Belén Genovés Casquete in charge; she will also serve as vice-president of the foundation's overall board. The appointment was formalised at a founding session held at the foundation's headquarters in the city of Valencia.
Alongside Genovés, the committee includes Aurelio Gómez Cadenas, a professor at Jaume I University, as secretary, plus psychologist Ana Cerezuela Reverte and graduate José Caballer Mateu as members. This team will decide how to share support between preserving local heritage, running exhibitions at Casa Capellà Pallarés and Sala Glorieta, and projects that improve quality of life across the district.
Fundación Bancaja operates under the protection of the Valencian regional government following the transformation of the old savings bank, whose origins date back to 1878. Locally, the foundation also has industrial ties: gas regasification plant Saggas collaborates with it on cultural promotion in Camp de Morvedre. With this renewal, Sagunto keeps its own representation in one of the Valencian Community's most culturally influential foundations.
Territorial delegated committees, like the one in Sagunto, are the channel through which the foundation distributes much of its cultural support outside the city of Valencia, deciding which exhibitions, grants or activities receive funding each year in the district. The changeover comes at a time when several cultural organisations in Camp de Morvedre partly depend on this funding to sustain their programmes, from local art exhibitions to educational activities tied to heritage.
With the renewal, Genovés will also have to coordinate the committee's relationship with other private players active in the area, such as Saggas itself, under a public-private collaboration model that has become common for funding cultural life in Sagunto and its district.
Beyond Sagunto, Fundación Bancaja maintains similar delegated committees in other Valencian districts, a territorial model that lets it tailor its cultural support to each area's specific needs rather than centralising every decision in the city of Valencia.
For cultural players across the district, the renewal is above all about continuity: keeping open a funding channel they have relied on for years to sustain part of their annual activity.
