Lifeguards at Sagunto Municipal Pools Reject New Shift Schedule
Staff at Sagunto's municipal swimming pools, backed by trade union Intersindical Valenciana, unanimously rejected the council's latest shift-schedule proposal at a workers' assembly on 25 June and are considering industrial action.
The negotiating process between Sagunto City Council and the lifeguard instructors at its aquatic facilities has stalled. A joint working session on 23 June ended without any agreement, prompting the workforce to call a general assembly two days later. At that 25 June meeting, the staff voted unanimously to reject the council's proposed reshuffle of working shifts. Intersindical Valenciana — a trade union confederation founded in 2002 that holds majority representation both in this specific workforce and within the broader council workforce — is leading the pushback and has warned that workers are weighing options for escalation.
Alongside the scheduling dispute, the union is raising a separate complaint: when a staff member takes sick leave, no temporary replacement is brought in to cover the absence. The remaining team must absorb the extra hours over extended periods. Intersindical argues that this sustained overload is eroding working conditions and degrading the service provided to visitors at the municipal sports facilities.
The union is demanding that any future restructuring of shifts be built on transparent, objective criteria agreed jointly with workers' representatives, with full regard for individual seniority and professional background. According to El Periódico de Aquí.
