Sagunto levels its beaches after sand restoration with €8,000 investment
Sagunto City Council started levelling work on 26 June at the Almardà, Corinto and Malvarrosa beaches to remove a dangerous sand ledge left by a recent coastal restoration project.
Three beaches on the Sagunto (coastal district of Camp de Morvedre) shoreline —Almardà, Corinto and Malvarrosa— have developed a large drop-off at the water's edge, created by a sand replenishment project carried out earlier this year. The ledge was making it harder for beachgoers to enter the sea and was hampering the work of the municipal lifeguard service.
Levelling work began on Friday 26 June and is expected to last 15 days. Operations are scheduled during low-traffic morning hours to minimise disruption to swimmers. The project has a budget of €8,000 and is being carried out by a contractor hired through SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión — the City Council's own public company).
The start of the works was delayed because the council first had to obtain clearance from the Demarcación de Costas (Spanish Coastal Authority, under the Ministry for Ecological Transition), the state body responsible for approving any activity on public maritime land, including routine maintenance.
Work is progressing northward from the Almardà lifeguard post towards Malvarrosa beach. A similar situation has been reported at the beaches in Sueca, which reopened on 25 June after nearly a month closed for sand regeneration, according to Valencia Plaza.
