Campus Battery delay raises concerns as PowerCo gigafactory nears Sagunto

The vocational training centre planned next to PowerCo's battery gigafactory in Sagunto will not open until the 2027/2028 academic year — one year late — according to local political group Iniciativa Porteña.

Campus Battery, to be built on plot TR-5 of Parc Sagunt II next to the future PowerCo plant, was originally scheduled to open for the 2026/2027 school year — a timeline set in April 2025. The new target is 2027/2028. The delay matters given the project's scale: PowerCo SE (a Volkswagen Group subsidiary) is building the gigafactory with planned capacity to supply batteries for around 500,000 electric vehicles per year and more than 3,000 direct jobs.

Spokesperson Eduardo Márquez of Iniciativa Porteña warns that vocational training must lead industrial demand, not trail behind it. He also calls for a full refurbishment of CIPFP Eduardo Merello — the main vocational college in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) — which he says has accumulated unaddressed maintenance needs and waiting lists each academic year.

The group argues that Sagunto's industrial growth will benefit residents only if matched by an updated training network geared to energy-sector skills. According to El Periódico de Aquí.
