Fusión: Sagunto's Neighbourhood Stuck in an Unfinished Housing Development

Residents of Fusión, a settlement in the Internúcleos strip midway between Sagunto and Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), report repeated thefts, rodent infestations and neglected public spaces resulting from decades of incomplete urban development.

Fusión is a small residential area wedged between Sagunto's two main urban centres, roughly 2.5 km apart. Its streets mix modern homes with undeveloped plots and unmaintained green zones — the legacy of the original urban developer, the company Alser, going bankrupt before completing the infrastructure. Under the Valencian Urban Planning Act (Ley Urbanística Valenciana), the council can draw on financial guarantees Alser deposited to fund the outstanding works, and says it is actively pursuing this option. In the meantime, residents deal with regular vehicle thefts after dark — on 11 June, several individuals reportedly accessed a construction site and attempted to steal materials without being challenged — as well as persistent problems with rats, cockroaches and snakes. The community has started a petition to install surveillance cameras on Avenida de la Mallada and Avenida Barraquero. The council acknowledges the situation and points to the recent burial of high-voltage power lines as a concrete improvement after years of local demands. Reported by El Periódico de Aquí.
