Sagunto Relaunches Awareness Campaign Against Illegal Rubble Dumping in Natural Spaces

Sagunto City Council is reactivating its campaign against illegal construction waste dumping this June, after removing 3,910 tonnes in 2025 and already 1,911 tonnes in the first five months of 2026.

The Municipal Agriculture Department, working with the SAG (municipal services company) and the local police, is running the campaign throughout June via press, radio and city buses. The problem has been growing since April 2024: waste collected totalled 3,910 tonnes in 2025 and has already reached 1,911 tonnes through May 2026. Illegal dumps are appearing on rural paths, working farmland and protected natural areas, and can include hazardous materials such as asbestos or lead. Fines range from €900 for minor offences up to €45,000 for serious ones, and can reach €1,750,000 in the most severe cases. Construction waste must be taken to authorised recycling plants (RCD) or licensed landfill sites — not to eco-parks or natural areas. The Rural Guard detects dumps during patrols; residents can also report them through the council's electronic office, the mobile app or in person at SAIC offices. According to Sagunto City Council.
