Sagunto City Council's plenary session approved a motion to improve and maintain the municipality's sports facilities, including the tendering of works at the San Francisco de Borja pitch, while making any new stadium project conditional on securing adequate funding.

Sagunto City Council's plenary session approved a motion to improve and maintain the municipality's sports facilities. The decision includes the tendering of works at the San Francisco de Borja pitch — to be fitted with artificial turf — before the summer. The motion was brought by the Iniciativa Porteña municipal group and passed with votes from PSOE and Compromís per Sagunt.

Regarding the proposed new football stadium in the internúcleos area, with a planned capacity of 5,000 spectators and a projected cost of over €16 million, the council agreed that construction will proceed in phases only once public grants are confirmed and a detailed financial plan is in place — and without cutting budgets for regular maintenance of existing facilities.

Atlético Saguntino, the city's main football club, was founded in 1922 and competes in the Tercera Federación (fifth tier of Spanish football). It plays at the Camp Nou de Morvedre, a 2,000-capacity stadium renovated in 2025. The priority upgrade of the San Francisco de Borja pitch addresses the immediate needs of local club Mare Nostrum.
