Sagunto City Council paid tribute to local athlete Soukaina El Khayami, who won two silver medals at the Spanish University Athletics Championship in the 5,000 m and 10,000 m events, competing for the Universidad Jaume I (UJI) in Castellón. The reception took place in the council chamber with Mayor Darío Moreno and Sports Councillor Javier Timón.
Soukaina started running at the age of 24 and has since built an impressive international record: first place at the Berlin 10K, fifth at the Paris 10K, and national champion in the Ibiza 10K road race with her team. The Valencian Community now officially recognises her as a High-Performance Athlete, opening institutional support for her career.
In 2023, the city council had already honoured her with the Dorsal 261 Award, created to raise the visibility of women in sport locally (Ajuntament de Sagunt). The UJI, founded in 1991 in Castellón de la Plana, has around 14,000 students and a strong track record in university sports programmes. Soukaina expressed her hope that her story will inspire young people who feel that their circumstances may hold them back. Source: Ajuntament de Sagunt.
