Compromís pushes Sagunto council to speed up heritage management body
The Valencianist party Compromís is pressing Sagunto City Council to move faster on creating a heritage management body aimed at boosting economic activity in the historic Old Town.
Compromís per Sagunt has called for urgency in establishing a dedicated body to manage Sagunto's historical heritage, arguing that such an organisation would be essential to reviving the Ciutat Vella (Old Town) economically. According to the party, one of the body's key objectives would be to extend and improve the cultural season at the Roman Theatre — the first building in Spain to receive the title of National Monument in 1896, whose 1990s renovation sparked a prolonged court battle.
The Ciutat Vella has a significantly lower population density than Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), a legacy of twentieth-century demographic shifts towards the industrial coastal zone that makes economic renewal all the more pressing. Compromís made these demands during a meeting of ADETURSA, the municipal body linked to local tourism. A dedicated management entity would allow better coordination of investment, cultural programming and tourism across the historic quarter. According to elperiodic.com, Compromís expects the council to set a concrete timetable for the body's creation.
