Sagunto honours 13 centenarians — a record for its cultural week
Mayor Darío Moreno presided over the annual tribute to Sagunto's hundred-year-old residents during the 21st Senior Citizens Cultural Week, with a record 13 honourees in 2026.
The 21st edition of Sagunto's Senior Citizens Cultural Week — Semana Cultural de las Personas Mayores — reached its highlight with the traditional ceremony honouring residents who have turned one hundred years old. This year's event welcomed 13 honourees, the highest number since the ceremony began, continuing a tradition held without interruption for at least two decades.
Each honouree received a commemorative plaque from municipal authorities in recognition of a century of life shared with the town. The event is organised by the Municipal Social Services Department (Concejalía de Servicios Sociales) of Sagunto City Council.
Mayor Darío Moreno (PSPV-PSOE, the Valencian Socialists) described the ceremony as his favourite duty as mayor. For context, Spain had approximately 19,573 centenarians as of 2022, placing it among the highest densities in Europe. Sagunto's record figure this year mirrors that broader demographic trend across the Camp de Morvedre comarca. According to aytosagunto.es.
