Sagunto's mayor visits PowerCo gigafactory in Salzgitter and advances twinning talks
Mayor Darío Moreno travelled to Salzgitter, Germany, on a twin mission: to inspect the already-operational PowerCo battery plant and to advance the twinning process between the two cities.
The Sagunto mayor led a delegation to PowerCo's gigafactory in the German city of Salzgitter, which began serial production in December 2025 and currently employs more than 1,000 people. The visit aimed to study the production model that will be replicated at Sagunto's own future plant ahead of its planned launch in September 2026.
The trip also included formal meetings with Salzgitter's mayor and municipal council to push forward the twinning process. Moreno highlighted the shared identity of both cities: each has two main population centres and a history rooted in iron and steel manufacturing — a common heritage that forms the basis for future cooperation.
PowerCo SE (Volkswagen Group subsidiary, founded July 2022) operates its first gigafactory in Salzgitter with a designed capacity of up to 20 GWh per year. Salzgitter itself is a city of 104,970 inhabitants in Lower Saxony whose industrial history dates back to the steel works established in 1937; its main employers today include Salzgitter AG, Volkswagen, MAN and Robert Bosch.
