General strike on 11 November 2026 in Sagunto: housing protests planned until that date

An assembly of about 100 people set out a calendar of housing protests from 2 to 11 November in Sagunto and the Camp de Morvedre district.

Anyone who wants to join the housing protests in Sagunto and its district now has dates to work with: the Plataforma per l'Habitatge de Sagunt (Sagunto housing platform) has closed a calendar of six events between 2 and 11 November, with the general strike on the last day as the finishing point.

On Monday 2 November a poster campaign starts in neighbourhoods and towns across the Camp de Morvedre district. On Wednesday 4 November, information leaflets will be handed out at the Sagunto market. On Thursday 5 November a rally is planned at the same time as the municipal council plenary session, where a motion backed by the platform will be presented. On Saturday 7 November the activity moves to Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), and on Sunday 8 November, at 9.30, a district caravan will leave Algar de Palància and pass through several towns.

On Wednesday 11 November, the day of the strike, the groups expect to organise information pickets outside large companies and actions linked to the consumer strike. In Puerto de Sagunto there will also be a rally at the Triángulo Umbral, followed by a march to the Alameda.

The calendar came out of an assembly held on Tuesday 27 October at the Casal Jove (youth centre) in Puerto de Sagunto, attended by about 100 people. The platform called the meeting. It wants to widen citizen mobilisation in response to a situation that hits hardest those who struggle to move out of the family home or spend a large share of their income on rent.

The group's spokeswoman, Carmen Subirón, opened the session with a review of what has been done so far. Representatives of the Sindicat d'Habitatge (housing union), the Sindicat de Llogateres (tenants' union) and Junts per l'Habitatge then explained how they organise and which tools they use to defend the right to decent housing. The Comitè per una Educació Pública (committee for public education) also spoke, setting out its demands in defence of public schooling.

The second half of the meeting centred on the strike. José Manuel Muñoz, of CCOO, and Ana Estellés, of UGT (both trade unions), explained the reasons for the call and what is planned in the district. Both unions, together with other organisations, have called a 24-hour stoppage to demand affordable homes, wages that cover their cost, better working conditions and measures against the rising cost of living.

This is not the first time housing has reached the Sagunto council chamber through a citizen initiative. According to elperiodic.com, in July 2015 the plenary session approved a declaration making Sagunto a city opposed to evictions from family homes or first residences, on the proposal of the Plataforma de Afectados por la Hipoteca del Camp de Morvedre (mortgage victims' platform). The text included an action protocol with fifteen specific measures. No details have been released about the motion to be presented on 5 November, so its content will only become known at the plenary session itself.

The meeting ended with an open discussion with those present and a request from the platform: keep the neighbourhood organisation going after the strike day too. According to El Periódico de Aquí, with additional data from elperiodic.com on the 2015 declaration.
