Canet d'en Berenguer negotiates a permanent Civil Guard barracks
Canet d'en Berenguer, a town in the Camp de Morvedre district, is negotiating a permanent Civil Guard barracks in the former Hogar del Jubilado, but funding and an opening date are still open.
For now, Canet d'en Berenguer has no date for getting its Civil Guard barracks back. What does exist is a conversation, open for a year and a half and more, between the town council and the Civil Guard (Spain's national police force with military status). It has matured over time but runs into two unknowns: where the money will come from to fit out the premises, and when the doors could open.
The building chosen by the governing team is the old Hogar del Jubilado (a social centre for pensioners). Its backers point to two advantages: it is well connected to the surrounding towns, and the CV-3175 road leads from it to the beach area.
It would not be the first time the town has its own officers, since there was a barracks on the beach for years. What has changed, according to the local government, is the scale. Canet was listed in the municipal register with 8,297 residents at the start of 2025, while the mayor estimates summer peaks above 30,000 people, that is, more than three times that figure. That number should be read as the mayor's own calculation, not an official statistic.
The debate reached the council plenary session on 2 October. Mayor Pere Antoni said the negotiation is on the right track and that he expects the officers to return soon. He explained that in a few years the population has almost doubled and argued that Canet falls under the Civil Guard's area, so having the force there is a need that residents have asked for, not a whim.
Two payment models are on the table: the Ministry of the Interior covering the fit-out of the building, or the cost being split through shared funding.
Until it is decided who pays, there will be no opening date and no timetable for works or for moving officers in. The two pending answers are who pays and the opening day; until they arrive, the project remains a negotiation.
