Puerto de Sagunto packs council hall for talk on total solar eclipse
More than 400 people filled the assembly hall of the Casa Municipal de Cultura in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district) this Tuesday, at the town's first talk on the total solar eclipse coming on 12 August.
The countdown to the total solar eclipse of 12 August is already generating excitement in Puerto de Sagunto. Last Tuesday, the Casa Municipal de Cultura filled all 425 seats in its assembly hall for the talk "Sagunto, Territorio Eclipse: historia, ciencia y emoción de un eclipse" ("Sagunto, Eclipse Territory: history, science and emotion of an eclipse"), organised by the council's Department of Science, Innovation and University as part of the programme leading up to the event.
The talk was given by Isabel Cordero and Avelino Vicente, from the Sapiencia science outreach association, who explained how a total eclipse forms, its value for astronomical research, and several historical curiosities about the phenomenon. The question-and-answer session drew many families, with children eager to ask how to safely watch the sky. Before the talk began, attendees received certified eclipse glasses along with safety recommendations for viewing the sun without risking eye damage.
Councillor for Science, Innovation and University Toni Iborra opened the event and thanked Sapiencia for its collaboration. He said the full house shows how much interest science generates among residents, and argued that the department -- created earlier this term -- helps give visibility to the work of researchers and professionals, benefiting both quality of life and the local business fabric, where several companies rely on a strong scientific and technological base in their daily activity.
The interest is no coincidence: the 12 August eclipse will cross northern Spain coast to coast, placing Valencia within the path of totality, while Madrid and Barcelona will fall just outside it. In the city of Valencia, totality is expected between 20:32 and 20:33 in the evening, roughly half an hour before sunset, lasting about one minute -- a brief window that explains why the council has built a dedicated programme around the observation.
The agenda continues in the coming days with a science exhibition at the Pantalán (pier) of Puerto de Sagunto, offering information about the eclipse and its astronomical significance. The programme will close on 12 August itself with a collective viewing event organised by the council, which will turn Sagunto into one of the privileged spots to witness the total solar eclipse.
