Sagunto turns former slaughterhouse into an employment training centre in Puerto de Sagunto
The Morvedre III Training Centre, housed in the renovated old municipal slaughterhouse in Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district), now trains residents and municipal staff after a €400,000 refurbishment co-funded by EU FEDER-EDUSI regional funds.
Sagunto has added a new piece to its employability strategy. A building that once served as the municipal slaughterhouse in Puerto de Sagunto has been turned, after a refurbishment costing nearly €400,000 and half-funded by the EU's FEDER-EDUSI programme, into the Morvedre III Training Centre. Mayor Darío Moreno led an institutional visit this week, joined by councillors Raúl Palmero, María José Carrera and Javier Raro.
The old industrial building is now divided into four training areas: three 45-square-metre classrooms with digital whiteboards and laptops, and a 150-square-metre workshop classroom, plus offices for teaching and administrative staff. Courses accredited by Labora, the Valencian regional employment service, are already running there, alongside internal training for municipal employees.
For the mayor, the move reflects the fact that Sagunto is going through a shift in its economic model, driven by projects such as PowerCo's battery gigafactory, which will require job profiles very different from the district's traditional ones. With this refurbishment, the City Council expands its network of professional training spaces, having already converted other industrial premises in the port area into a similar centre back in 2023.
The new centre joins a growing network of training facilities the City Council is expanding as the local economy reorients towards sectors such as electric vehicles and renewable energy — a shift in Sagunto associated above all with the arrival of PowerCo's battery gigafactory and the gradual conversion of the port area's industrial activity. Courses already accredited by Labora share the building with internal training for municipal staff, a combined use that makes the most of a space originally intended only for administrative and teaching purposes.
Converting disused industrial buildings — the former slaughterhouse is only the latest example — has become a regular strategy for the Council to give new public uses to buildings that for decades housed activities that have since disappeared, without needing to build new facilities from scratch.
The centre is located just a few minutes from the port district's town centre, making it easy to reach on foot or by public transport both for people already working in the area and for those looking to retrain without having to travel outside the municipality.
