Sagunto presents ceremonial hair combs to its Falles festival queens
Sagunto's Falleras Mayores (the honorary queens of the Falles festival), Empar Ríos and Maria Pozuelo, received their official ceremonial hair combs, known as peinetas, from the city council this Thursday, 23 July.
The comb design, in the traditional flor d'aigua (water flower) style, was updated this year by goldsmith Daniel Bada. A peineta is an ornamental comb, chiselled in brass and traditionally silver- or gold-plated, worn on top of the hair bun as part of the traditional Valencian costume. Ríos and Pozuelo, named district Falleras Mayores last June, chose the design themselves. At the same event, the council also gave both queens and their courts of honour -six members each- fabric in berry, maravedí and jade colours, made by Vives y Marí, which the Valencian costume shops 1700 and Segles will use to make the outfits: 1700 for the adult Fallera Mayor and her court, Segles for the child Fallera Mayor and hers. Mayor Darío Moreno, councillor for Festivals and Popular Culture Patricia Sánchez, FJFS president Aitor Muñoz, and vice-president Juan Carlos Castro attended, along with other officials and Falles representatives.
