Iniciativa Porteña demands urgent deal to end Sagunto's SAG labour dispute
Local group Iniciativa Porteña is calling on Sagunto's mayor to get directly involved in ending the SAG strike, which is leaving overflowing bins just as the town's patron-saint festival begins and summer tourists arrive.
SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión) is the municipal public company responsible for the upkeep, order and cleanliness of Sagunto: waste collection, street cleaning, recycling points, beach cleaning, parks, cleaning of public buildings, school maintenance, towing services and the transfer plant, among other services. The labour dispute between management and the workers' committee has dragged on for weeks, with the added risk that rubbish could pile up further once three giant screens go up for the World Cup final and more visitors arrive for the festival.
Iniciativa Porteña spokesperson Eduardo Márquez is asking for direct dialogue between the City Council — whose mayor chairs SAG — and the workers' committee. He also questions the decision to hire five security guards a day for ten days to protect SAG facilities, arguing that money should go toward negotiations instead.
