Sagunto to give out 11,000 free glasses for the solar eclipse
The city council is organising talks, a science exhibition and a celebration at the Pantalán pier in Puerto de Sagunto for the 12 August eclipse.
Eleven thousand certified eclipse glasses, given out free from late July, will let people watch the event without risking their eyesight. Pick-up points include the local peñas (festival associations), FACOSA-member shops, tourist offices, Campus Delfín and the Escola d'Estiu (summer school), as well as the markets in Sagunto (29 July) and Puerto de Sagunto (6 August), and the seafront promenade (8 August).
The Department of Science, Innovation and Universities has also prepared a talk on solar eclipses with safe-viewing advice, ahead of the main evening event by the Pantalán pier in Puerto de Sagunto, which will include a science exhibition. Mayor Darío Moreno hopes the day becomes a shared memory for the whole city.
The eclipse will begin around 19:38, peak around 20:32, and totality, with the sun just 4.54 degrees above the horizon, will last just over a minute. Because it happens at sunset, clear, west-facing viewing spots are recommended. Spain has not seen a total solar eclipse since 1905, making this the first in over a century, with a path crossing northern Spain coast to coast, including the Balearic Islands.
