ASECAM meets new Mediterranean Corridor commissioner in Sagunto
Commissioner Joan Calabuig met business group ASECAM, mayor Darío Moreno and port officials in Sagunto to explain progress on this key rail infrastructure project.
The meeting, held at the Espais Econòmics Empresarials business park, also included the president of the Valencia Port Authority, Mar Chao; ASECAM president Cristina Plumed; and CEV Valencia president Eva Blasco. Calabuig said 800 kilometres of track are currently under construction and that, since 2018, more than €6.2 billion has been invested in the corridor, which has been part of the EU's Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) since 2011 and links 245 million people — over half the EU's population — and two-thirds of its GDP, from Algeciras to Stockholm. On the Sagunto-Teruel-Zaragoza section, over €437 million has already been invested, though electrification is still pending. Businesses raised concerns about the full traffic closure between Castellón and Tarragona planned for summer 2027, and about the extra cost of operating with two different track gauges. Plumed stressed the corridor will be essential once the PowerCo battery plant and the new Parc Sagunt II intermodal station are running. Mayor Darío Moreno noted these investments keep attracting companies to Sagunto, such as PowerCo (Volkswagen's battery unit) and Inditex (fashion retail group).
