Sagunto beach patrol finds over one kilogram of cocaine floating in swim zone
On 27 June, a Sagunto Municipal Police beach unit patrol found a package containing more than one kilogram of cocaine floating in the bathing area of Almardà beach during routine coastal surveillance.
The discovery was made late in the afternoon of 27 June, when officers spotted a black rectangular bundle wrapped in plastic and adhesive tape near the beach first-aid post. A raffia sack was found a short distance away. After retrieving the package from the water, the unit launched a full coastal sweep using both a boat and a drone, but found no additional packages.
The Civil Guard (Guardia Civil), which holds exclusive jurisdiction over drug trafficking on Spain's coast since absorbing the Carabineros Corps in 1940, arrived immediately and took custody of the package. At the Municipal Police headquarters, a joint small incision revealed a white powder; a subsequent drug test confirmed it was cocaine.
Almardà beach is a protected natural area of almost two kilometres with coastal dunes at the northern edge of Sagunto's municipal territory. Regular patrols by the beach unit allowed early detection of the package before it reached the shore. Sagunto City Council confirmed that the Civil Guard transferred the package to official facilities for weighing and formal analysis.
