UGT calls for sustainable commuting plans at Sagunto's industrial zones

The union organised a seminar at its Sagunto office on the new law requiring large companies to negotiate sustainable workplace transport plans with workers before 5 December 2026.

UGT (Unión General de Trabajadores — Spain's second-largest trade union) organised a seminar at its Sagunto headquarters to examine the Sustainable Mobility Act, passed by the Spanish Parliament on 8 October 2025. The law requires companies with more than 200 workers — or over 100 per shift — and public bodies to have Sustainable Workplace Mobility Plans (PMST in Spanish) in place before 5 December 2026. Local secretary-general Ana Estellés stressed that these plans must be negotiated with workers' legal representatives, making unions essential partners in the process. The seminar focused on the industrial zones of Sagunto (Camp de Morvedre district), where private cars account for almost all commuting due to limited public transport, absent cycling infrastructure and poor links between industrial estates and residential areas. UGT, with nearly 985,000 members and a 32% share of elected workplace delegates nationwide, already participates in the mobility working groups for the area's industrial zones alongside local authorities and business associations. Estellés argued that social dialogue is the indispensable tool for aligning environmental targets with practical workplace needs. According to elperiodicodeaqui.com, the law's success will depend on companies, unions and public bodies working together.
