Sagunto Rolls Out 1,634 Smart Side-Loading Waste Bins Across the Municipality
Sagunto City Council has installed more than two thirds of 1,634 new side-loading waste containers across the municipality, with full deployment expected by August 2026.
The city is overhauling how residents dispose of household waste, prioritising accessibility and data-driven logistics. Manufacturer Contenur is supplying the new side-loading units, which will be clustered into roughly 350 complete sorting stations — one for each waste stream: packaging, paper, organic, glass and general residue. No station will be more than 150 metres from the next, so every household gains a full recycling point within walking distance. The redesigned bins drop foot pedals and levers entirely, sit lower to the ground and leave a wider clear sightline on the pavement. Built-in sensors will transmit live data on emptying times, precise location and waste weight, giving municipal operator SAG the information needed to restructure collection routes and shift pickup frequency to match real neighbourhood demand. Total project cost reaches €1,880,647: the council funds €916,968, Saggas — the local liquefied natural gas regasification plant that backed 43 social initiatives across the comarca in 2023 — contributes €774,181, and the remaining €189,498 comes from NextGenerationEU, the EU's €750-billion post-pandemic recovery fund. Decommissioned containers will enter a recycling stream. Source: Ajuntament de Sagunt.
