Sagunto's performing arts festival fills August with theatre, dance, music and circus around the theme «Who are we?», running 1 to 23 August.

The 43rd edition of Sagunt a Escena (Sagunto's summer arts festival) brings together 19 productions across the Roman Theatre and open-air spaces in Sagunt and Puerto de Sagunto (coastal district). The festival is jointly organised by the Valencian Regional Ministry of Culture, the Institut Valencià de Cultura (IVC), Sagunto City Council and the Provincial Council of Valencia. Eight shows take place inside the Roman Theatre, while 11 free-access performances make up the Off Sagunto strand. Three quarters of the lineup — 15 out of 20 productions — come from Valencian companies, reinforcing the festival's regional focus.

Highlights include «Hamlet, una versión recontralibre» by Peruvian company Teatro La Plaza, featuring performers with Down syndrome who retell the Shakespearean tragedy through their own experiences. Local association InsProject will run a dance workshop tied to the show. Coque Malla stars in Brecht's «Threepenny Opera» on 8 August, and flamenco singer Estrella Morente closes the Roman Theatre stage on 22 August. Choreographer Sol Picó brings the curtain down on the whole festival on 23 August at the Plaza de la Antigua Morería. Source: Valencia Plaza.
