Sagunto's PP Demands Urgent Action Plan for Growing Feral Cat Colonies

The People's Party says promised cat shelters and donated containers remain unused while feral cat colonies spread unchecked across Sagunto neighbourhoods, and is demanding a concrete municipal plan.

Two years after Sagunto's governing team led by Mayor Darío Moreno pledged to open cat shelters, none has become operational. PP spokesperson Ximo Catalán has also highlighted that several adapted containers for housing stray cats, donated by a neighbouring municipality, are sitting idle in council facilities. The opposition labels the overall response improvised and uncoordinated.

Catalán directed his demands at the mayor and councillor Javier Timón, calling for a plan that puts the available containers and resources to work, expands sterilisation campaigns, and deepens collaboration with animal protection associations and volunteers. He acknowledged that without those voluntary groups the problem would already be considerably worse.

Spain's Animal Welfare Law 7/2023 requires councils to operate the CER method (Capture, Sterilise and Return) as a non-lethal control mechanism for community cat colonies, and to provide round-the-clock animal collection services. According to elperiodicodeaqui.com, Sagunto council has yet to implement either obligation.
