In 2027 the waste treatment bill in the Camp de Morvedre district, Sagunto included, will be 106.29 euros: 13.32 more than now. The Palancia Belcaire Consortium approved it on 16 October; the PSPV wants alternatives.

Residents of Sagunto and the rest of the Camp de Morvedre district will pay an annual fee of 106.29 euros for waste treatment in 2027. They currently pay 92.97, so each bill goes up by 13.32 euros, or 1.11 euros a month. The figure came out of the assembly of the Palancia Belcaire Consortium (the multi-municipality body that runs waste treatment), which on Friday 16 October amended the tax ordinance regulating this fee.

It is not the first jump. In 2025 the fee was 79.33 euros, so between that year and 2027 the bill will have grown by 26.96 euros, or 34%. In household terms, a home that paid about 6.61 euros a month two years ago will pay about 8.86.

The Consortium justifies the rise by the trend in its costs. It estimates that in 2027 the service will cost about 2.5 million euros more than in the current year. Among the causes it lists the revision of contracted service prices, the cost of energy and fuel, and labour. It adds a local factor: more tonnes of construction and demolition waste and of bulky waste coming from the area's municipalities have to be treated. According to the body, this cost keeps growing and must be reflected in budget forecasts so the service can continue.

The Consortium's president, María Carmen Climent (Partido Popular), presents the decision as a duty to keep the management financially balanced and to offer a service matched to the municipalities' needs and to what it costs to provide it. Climent also insists that cutting the waste produced is the way to hold down future costs: the less is handled, the more sustainable the system.

The body brings together 56 town councils from the Camp de Morvedre, Alto Palancia and Plana Baixa districts, together with the provincial councils of Valencia and Castellón and the Valencian Government. That is why a vote in the assembly affects bills in three districts at once.

The Socialists read it the opposite way. Jorge Vidal, PSPV councillor in Sagunt and the town's representative on the Consortium, rejects the rise and blames the Partido Popular's management. He recalls that his group already voted against last year and warned then that the increase stemmed from poor management. In his view, a year later the PP raises the fee again instead of looking for other routes and using up the available discounts and aid.

The PSPV also offers its own figures, calculated from the Consortium's reports. By that count, residents and businesses in the 56 municipalities together will pay almost five million euros more a year than in 2025. For the Socialists, an increase of that size is not essential: they point out that 2025 closed with a surplus of over 800,000 euros in ordinary spending and that the Consortium holds a reserve of 3.3 million. With those funds, they argue, the burden on taxpayers could be eased before touching the bill. Vidal adds a reminder from the archives: in 2020, when the PP was in opposition within the Consortium, its representatives rejected successive fee increases and blamed those running the body at the time.

The Socialists extend the criticism to the Valencian Government. Its contribution to the Consortium is around 100,000 euros a year, an amount they consider insufficient. Vidal recalls that the current president of the Valencian Government, Juanfran Pérez Llorca, argued while leading the PP in Alicante province that the regional administration should absorb the rise in waste treatment costs at the Marina Consortium, so as not to pass it on to citizens. The Sagunt councillor asks him to apply that criterion now and not let the new increase end up falling on households and businesses in the Camp de Morvedre district.

There is a local precedent that should not be confused with this fee. In June 2025, as elperiodic.com reported, Sagunto's plenary session unanimously agreed to review the municipal waste charge, which had gone from 52 euros in 2024 to 111 in 2025. The motion was submitted by Iniciativa Porteña and backed by all groups. That is a municipal collection charge, separate from the treatment fee set by the Consortium, and its review follows its own track.
