Sagunto council invests €807,000 in new plaza Sant Cristòfol building
Construction of the future multipurpose building at plaza Sant Cristòfol, in Sagunto's town centre, is progressing well after a municipal investment of €807,191 awarded to Civicons Construcciones Públicas SL.
Sagunto will gain a new municipal space in the heart of its town centre over the coming months: the multipurpose building rising at plaza Sant Cristòfol, designed above all for elderly residents and neighbourhood associations. The works, the council confirms, are progressing without setbacks and are already well advanced.
The final amount the council has committed to the project reaches €807,191.23, including tax, after the contract was awarded to builder Civicons Construcciones Públicas SL. The design calls for a single-storey building with a multi-purpose hall — able to hold at least a hundred people — two separate offices and a dedicated meeting room, plus a control area, storage space and restrooms.
One technical detail worth noting is a non-walkable roof, a solution designed with possible future extensions of the building in mind. The works package awarded to Civicons goes beyond construction itself: it also covers the electrical and lighting network, climate control and ventilation, plumbing and drainage, and fire-protection systems along with other special installations required for a public building.
This new facility arrives as the council steps up initiatives aimed at Sagunto's elderly residents: this same week it also confirmed the second edition of the "Caminando por la vida" (Walking for Life) march, set for 1 October. Once opened, the plaza Sant Cristòfol building will become a permanent base for neighbourhood associations and municipal leisure, culture and participation programmes in this part of the city, adding to the covered spaces available outside the historic centre.
For now, the council has not committed to a firm handover date, beyond insisting that the pace of construction matches the schedule. Municipal sources describe the future facility as a flexible space, able to host everything from training workshops to neighbourhood meetings or activities organised by the Elderly and Culture departments throughout the year.
Sagunto's push to provide covered spaces designed for older residents is not an isolated move: the council has been expanding its social services aimed at this group in recent years, in line with a trend seen across much of Camp de Morvedre as the demographic weight of older residents grows. The plaza Sant Cristòfol building joins a network of municipal venues — elderly centres, neighbourhood associations, community spaces — that has been growing in recent years both in the historic centre and in Puerto de Sagunto.
Plaza Sant Cristòfol sits in a well-established part of Sagunto's historic core, surrounded by homes and local shops, which means the future building will be within walking distance for many residents in the area, without needing to travel to other parts of the city to take part in activities organised by council departments.
As is usual with municipally owned works, the project has gone through the standard stages of technical drafting, public tender and award before construction itself could begin — a process that, for works of this size, often takes several months from initial approval to the start of work on site.
This kind of facility sits on the municipal calendar alongside larger investments tied to the city's industrial transformation, such as the education and mobility infrastructure being planned in parallel with the development of PowerCo's battery gigafactory, although the two are different in nature: while the latter respond to industrial growth, the plaza Sant Cristòfol building meets a more everyday social and neighbourhood need.
The fact that the building is planned as a single storey, with no need for a lift or internal changes in level, also reflects accessibility criteria that increasingly shape the design of municipal facilities aimed at older residents or people with reduced mobility — something not always resolved in the city's older venues.
The council has not said whether it plans to replicate this same multipurpose-building model in other Sagunto neighbourhoods, though municipal sources do not rule out repeating the formula if the plaza Sant Cristòfol experience proves successful once it opens. In any case, each new facility of this kind reduces reliance on association premises or spaces temporarily loaned for neighbourhood activities.
