Faura creates the first pictogram for the carrer de la pilota, open to other towns
Faura, a municipality in the Camp de Morvedre district, has created the first pictogram for the carrer de la pilota, which will join the ARASAAC database so councils and groups across the Valencian Community can use it.
Faura has added a new symbol to its cognitive accessibility project: a pictogram representing the carrer de la pilota, one of the venues where Valencian pilota (a traditional sport in which players hit the ball with the hand) is played. It is the first pictogram dedicated to this space, and it will not stay only in this Camp de Morvedre district village, because it will be added to the ARASAAC database, so any council, administration, club or group will be able to use it.
The image was unveiled during the XXXV Día de la Pilota (35th Pilota Day), organised by the Federació de Pilota Valenciana (Valencian Pilota Federation). The event took place at the Fundació Esportiva Municipal de València (Valencia municipal sports foundation) and was attended by representatives of the Federation, the Generalitat Valenciana (regional government) and the foundation itself, as well as Faura's mayor, Consol Duran.
The town council's cognitive accessibility project, designed to make municipal facilities and spaces easier to understand, pays special attention to people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Pictograms, simple images that make public spaces easier to understand, can also help people with intellectual disabilities, older people with cognitive decline and people with language disorders find their way around.
The initiative began with Faura's first pictogram of its own and has continued with the gradual addition of symbols of this kind in municipal spaces. During that work, the council found that the trinquet (an indoor pilota court) already had a pictogram, but that there was no specific symbol for the carrer de la pilota, and decided to create one.
It was designed following the technical guidelines of ARASAAC, the Aragonese Centre for Augmentative and Alternative Communication, with the advice of a psychologist to make sure it was suitable from the point of view of cognitive accessibility. The design also has the approval of the Federació de Pilota Valenciana and of the Club de Pilota de Faura.
Duran highlighted the town's ties to the sport, especially to the galotxa, one of the traditional forms of Valencian pilota, and said the pictogram lets Faura keep strengthening its link with pilota.
