Sagunto's August plenary session to vote on low-emission zone ordinance

Sagunto's August ordinary plenary session takes place this Thursday, 6 August, from 9am in the council chamber, with around twenty items on the agenda that directly affect residents' daily lives. The item most likely to be felt on the street is approval of the ordinance regulating the city's low-emission zones, a rule that will set out where and under what conditions certain vehicles can circulate depending on their environmental sticker. The measure arrives years behind the legal schedule: Spain's climate change law has required municipalities of more than 50,000 residents — like Sagunto — to have these zones approved since 2021, with a deadline of 2023 that the council missed at the time.
On infrastructure for the port district, the Iniciativa Porteña council group is bringing a proposal to build an outdoor municipal swimming pool in the neighbourhood, while Compromís per Sagunt is pushing to improve mobile phone coverage along the port's coastal strip, a long-standing complaint among residents there. Councillors will also debate an inter-institutional plan for maintenance and climate control (air conditioning) in the municipality's schools, also proposed by Compromís.
The Education department will bring a change to responsibilities over infrastructure works at IES Número 5-Altos Hornos school under Edificant, the Valencian regional programme for renovating school buildings, along with the appointment of new members to the municipal school board. In Culture, the plenary will vote on awarding the city medal to the SOCOLTIE cooperative and to the Unión Musical Porteña band, in recognition of their track record in the municipality.
Institutional motions include messages of solidarity with the Venezuelan people after the earthquakes of 24 June and with those affected by this summer's wildfires, plus a proposal from the Partido Popular (centre-right) group renewing calls for the Cantabrian-Mediterranean rail corridor on the Sagunto-Teruel stretch, whose planning study has been expired since 2015 with no work resumed since. Councillors will also vote on a change to the water and sewage tariff ordinance, and debate declaring a municipal Agriculture Day.
