Lira Saguntina brass band fills the Roman Theatre with music again this Saturday
The Lira Saguntina symphonic band will perform the traditional Fiestas Concert at Sagunto's Roman Theatre on Saturday 18 July at 10.30pm, with a free bus from Plaza Mayor.
The concert, one of the most deep-rooted events on the fiestas programme, returns to a stage the century-old music society considers its own — it has performed there during the patron-saint festivities for decades. The Roman Theatre, whose 1990s restoration was ruled illegal by Spain's Supreme Court although its demolition was later judged unworkable and dropped in 2009, remains the city's leading heritage venue for major cultural events.
The programme will feature works by Valencian and international composers. To make access easier, the city council is running a free bus leaving Plaza Mayor at 9.30pm bound for the theatre. The society's president, José Manuel Tarazona, highlighted the artistic and financial effort put into keeping this tradition alive for the people of Sagunto.
The Joaquín Rodrigo Music School, run by Lira Saguntina, is also taking enrolments for the coming academic year and is adding new workshops in Valencian traditional singing (Cant Valencià) and flamenco guitar, with sign-ups open at the society's office throughout July.
