Sagunto's Alternatura hiking group ends season with a trip to the Dolomites
The town's Alternatura hiking programme wrapped up its season with an eight-day trip to the Italian Alps, where 36 local residents climbed Piz Boé and hiked around the Tre Cime di Lavaredo peaks.
Run by the council's Physical Activity, Health and Sports department, the trip took place from 6 to 13 July, based in the Alta Badia valley, where the group covered six-to-eight-hour routes each day through some of the range's best-known spots.
Highlights included the climb up Piz Boé (3,152 metres), considered the easiest 3,000-metre peak to reach in the Dolomites, which draws crowds in summer, and offers views of most of the range's major peaks from its summit. The route also took in the Tre Cime di Lavaredo (Three Peaks), a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2009, whose north face, first climbed in 1933, is one of the Alps' great climbing walls, as well as the Nuvolau mountain refuge and the Galleria Lagazuoi tunnel, at 2,752 metres.
Beyond the physical challenge, participants enjoyed traditional Italian food at the end of each day. With this trip, Alternatura closes its season and is already preparing its autumn-winter programme, which starts in October.
