Sagunto celebrates at the Glorieta as Spain reaches the World Cup final
Hundreds of fans watched on a big screen in Cronista Chabret square as Spain beat France 0-2, with a goal by Mikel Oyarzábal, sending the national team to Sunday's World Cup final.
The goal came from a penalty in the 22nd minute, after a foul on Lamine Yamal, and set off wild celebrations among the crowd gathered in front of the screen set up at the Glorieta (Sagunto's central square). Pedro Porro added a second goal in the second half. It is only the second World Cup final in Spanish national team history — the only previous one was in 2010 in South Africa, which Spain won 1-0 against the Netherlands with an extra-time goal by Iniesta.
The big-screen initiative, run by the Tourism Department together with the fan-club federations of Sagunto and Puerto de Sagunto, also brought the match to the Puerto de Sagunto Civic Centre and the Voro Alandí Cultural Centre in Almardà. The city council will repeat the event on Sunday 19 July at 9pm for the final — a tournament being played for the first time with 48 teams and jointly hosted by three countries. In Sagunto, the screen will move to the Recinto Ferial (fairgrounds), coinciding with the patron-saint fiestas of Santos de la Piedra (Sagunto's patron saints). According to El Periódico de Aquí.
