Puçol activates special beach security for Wednesday's solar eclipse
Puçol, a municipality bordering the Camp de Morvedre district and also visible from Sagunto, has activated a special security and traffic plan for Wednesday's solar eclipse, with its beach as an official observation point.
The operation, coordinated among various municipal and regional emergency services, will be adjusted throughout the day depending on real crowd numbers and traffic needs identified as they arise. The main priority is making sure access to the town — and especially to the beach area — can handle the expected volume of vehicles: entrances will therefore close progressively as available capacity fills up, and once car parks reach their maximum, the affected roads will be cut off. Restricted circulation points include Camí la Mar, near Travessera; the Assagador–Travessera junction; and access via Costera and the paelleros (paella-cooking) area.
Puçol beach takes the bulk of the operation, having been designated the official observation point for the phenomenon. Health and security services there are especially reinforced: the health centre will stay open 24 hours, the number of available ambulances is being increased, and lifeguard hours are being extended. Police will also deploy dynamic patrols that can be redistributed around the area as needs arise during the day, which has been declared under a pre-emergency alert level.
The choice of Puçol's coastline as an observation spot is no accident: the path of totality crosses Spain between Luarca, in Asturias, and Peñíscola, in Castellón, passing very close to the Valencian coast. In Castellón de la Plana, the nearest city on that path to Puçol, totality will last 1 minute and 34 seconds — one of the reasons the area has drawn so much interest from eclipse watchers.
The beach itself underwent a major transformation two decades ago: an old stony shore became, with a refurbishment completed in 2004, the fine-sand beach and seafront promenade that now hosts this security operation. The police and health deployment is joined by the Sagunto-Puçol Maritime Police (Policía Marítima), a forest firefighter with a fire engine, Civil Protection staff, and additional Guardia Civil officers tasked with reinforcing surveillance and traffic control throughout the day.
The town council is asking people to avoid unnecessary car trips to areas that may reach maximum capacity and to follow security officers' instructions at all times. The plan, officials stress, is designed to stay flexible: decisions on road closures and restrictions will be made based on real traffic conditions and car park occupancy, prioritising the safety of residents and visitors — including the many people from Sagunto and the rest of Camp de Morvedre expected to head to the coast to watch the eclipse.
