Fifteen-day operation to flatten dangerous sand ledge on Sagunto's northern beaches
Sagunto municipality launched works on Friday to remove a sand drop of up to 1.5 metres on the beaches of Almardà, Corinto and Malvarrosa on the northern coast.
The northern stretch of Sagunto's coastline has been marked by a visible obstacle for weeks: a sand ledge that formed after the first heavy swells reshaped the beach profiles following a major coastal regeneration project. That scheme deposited over one million cubic metres of sand using European Union funding, but the freshly placed sediment quickly eroded into drops reaching up to 1.5 metres in some spots — making beach access difficult for people with reduced mobility and slowing down the lifeguard service.
A contractor hired through SAG — the council's public management company — began work on Friday 26 June at Almardà beach, which stretches nearly two kilometres and features an ecologically valuable dune belt. The levelling operation will move northward and reach Malvarrosa in about fifteen days, at a cost of approximately €8,000. Before the works could begin, Sagunto City Council had to obtain prior authorisations from both the national Coastal Authority (Demarcación de Costas) and the Valencian Government's Wildlife Service.
