Sagunto Levels Dangerous Sand Step on Three Northern Beaches
Sagunto City Council has launched a fifteen-day operation to remove a sand ledge on the beaches of Almardà, Corinto and Malvarrosa, with an investment of around €8,000 to restore safe and accessible beach access.
Work began on 26 June at the lifeguard station on Almardà beach and will progress northward to Malvarrosa. A contractor hired through the council's public management company SAG (Sociedad Anónima de Gestión) is carrying out the levelling, which is expected to take about two weeks.
The ledge formed as a direct result of a major coastal regeneration scheme that deposited more than one million cubic metres of sand on these shores — funded by the European Union through the Spanish Ministry for Ecological Transition. After the first heavy swells, the beach profile eroded and created drops of up to 1.5 metres in places, making access difficult for people with reduced mobility and slowing lifeguard response. The council had to obtain prior authorisations from both the national Coastal Authority (Demarcación de Costas) and the Valencian Government's Wildlife Service before works could start.
Councillor for Beaches Roberto Rovira noted that the intervention also addresses a demand raised by residents' associations from the northern coastal area. According to Sagunto City Council.
