More municipalities ask for rent-stressed area status despite the Consell's refusal
A growing number of PSPV-run councils are requesting rent-stressed area status to curb rents, while the regional Housing Ministry rejects the measure.
The number of municipalities run by the PSPV asking to be declared a rent-stressed area is rising, in an effort to contain rental prices within their boundaries. These councils argue that the tool makes it possible to cap rents in the most pressured markets and to protect residents' access to housing. In response, the regional Housing Ministry refuses to apply the measure, arguing that it reduces the supply of available flats, and instead favours promoting more affordable housing. The debate is especially relevant for municipalities such as Sagunto, where pressure on the residential market has intensified in recent years. The discussion sets two models against each other for tackling housing costs: direct price regulation or an increase in protected housing supply. This information was released by Valencia Plaza.
