Sagunto marks 750 years since the death of King Jaume I, conqueror of Valencia
27 July marks exactly 750 years since the death of Jaume I the Conqueror, and an opinion column highlights the key role Sagunto (then called Morvedre) played in building the medieval Kingdom of Valencia.
The column, published by El Periódico de Aquí, recalls that King Jaume I captured Morvedre — today's Sagunto — in 1239, a year after taking the city of Valencia, gaining control of the Palancia river corridor and the route from Catalonia. He later made the town a royal seat, from where the crown occasionally exercised authority and issued chancery documents on land grants, confirmation of rights and administration of the Kingdom of Valencia.
27 July marks exactly 750 years since Jaume I's death in 1276. Tradition places his death in Alzira, though chronicler Aurelià Lairón argues for the importance of this royal town in the Ribera area during those days. According to El Periódico de Aquí, with additional background from Wikipedia.
